Points Cost v.s. Effectivness

I run into the same problem everytime I make a list. Is this unit actually worth taking? More often than not we all make army lists that are very very effective in the eyes of our opponents. When in fact we couldnt make the list with everything we wanted. Every army list should have your core choices that you put in every list you make. This goes for almost all armies (Particularly Space Marines). Codex marines need tactical squads, while Blood Angels use Assault Marines and Sanguinary priests...or so I thought. Yesterday I played a 2v2 practice game for a tournament. In all the excitment of talking tactics and figuring out what I need I forgot the priests. (they give feel no pain and furious charge) Instead I ran 1 recusiarch 2(10man) assault marine squads with 2 melta guns and a power fist in each. 5 vanguard vets 4 power weapons and a power fist ,and 2 land speeders with a multimelta and a heavy flamer on each. This seemed all good and well. Until I realized what I had forgotten. My partner convinced me to keep my list. So I did.

I thought for sure that this meant that I would surely lose my assault marines. In order to take the priests i would have to get rid of the power weapons and speeders. After an entire game of losing men but staying alive, and land speeders blowing up eldar tanks. I asked myself, are priests really worth it? Can I play competitively without them? I tighed that game with my team being out numbered 4:1.

What I walked away with, was a whole new mind set. Maybe if I didnt take those exspensive priests as often or maybe even just for important squads, perhaps I could win more. After all it would have cost 225pts to get them, thats at least a stormraven. So I ask you, are there any units you play that maybe you might want to reconsider using in all of your games?
